Take a Look at the GMC Sierra's History

The GMC Sierra name has only been around for a handful of decades, but the current truck is the result of the brand's very first pickup, built in 1901 by the founders of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which General Motors bought in 1909. Over the years, GM trucks that would lead to the Sierra were constantly innovating. By 1927, the Sierra predecessor already had chrome-plated radiator trim and LED headlights. GMC made trucks for the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII. After the war, the automaker added bold signature grilles, integrated headlamps, and more. Skip ahead a few decades, and the very first GMC truck with a crew cab arrived in the 1970s and 1980s. This is also when heavy-duty trucks first got a dual rear axle. In 1987, GMC redesigned the pickup after 14 years of keeping it the same and finally gave the truck its current Sierra name.

The 1999 GMT800 Sierra 1500 was designed as a light-duty truck of a standard nature. The Sierra 2000 and the Sierra HD, which eventually became the 2500HD and 3500HD models we have today, quickly followed it. These 1999 Sierra 1500 models had a 285-horsepower Vortec engine, while heavy-duty models had more powerful choices, including a 300-horsepower V8. The first Denali with its premium amenities was offered in 2002. The Sierra underwent a complete redesign for 2007, getting more comfortable and receiving performance upgrades and extra aerodynamics. The heavy-duty versions were redesigned in 2009 for sharper styling and a reinforced frame. The 2015 model year brought the GMC Sierra significantly closer to what it looks like today and offered the first Duramax V8 with 765 pound-feet.
